Saint Agapetus of Pechersk

Reverend Agapetus of Pechersk is a monk of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, the great saint of Kievan Rus, who was the gratuitous doctor and is revered as a patron of medicine. Holy Agapetus, regarded as the first physician of Kievan Rus, became famous for gratuitous help he provided to the patients and acquired great fame for healing severely ill people with the help of prayer and potions, which he took himself and gave to his patients. Near the saint's relics, which are stored in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, many healings and amazing wonders are performed up to the present day.

According to Christian tradition, Gabriel opens the secret knowledge of God to the chosen ones. On icons, the Archangel Gabriel is often depicted with the flourishing branch of paradise or lily. There are also his images with a spherical mirror in hand, and sometimes with a candle inside the lamp. The mission of the Archangel Gabriel in the world is to help parents. First of all Gabriel helps those who are hoping to conceive. He gives parents the courage and strength, helps in gaining equability of mind and grace-filled faith that have the best effect on the formation and development of the baby.

The officers of Federal Security Service consider St Alexander Nevsky as their patron saint, and since January 2010 he has been performing the same function for the members of Voluntary Association for Assistance to Army, Aviation and Fleet (DOSAAF).

Alexandra of Rome is a Christian saint, who is revered as a martyr. "Alexandra strives for truth, and seeks in the spirit of man more than the bearers of many other names" (P. Florensky). The information about Alexandra is contained in the hagiography of St. George the Victorious. Alexandra was a pagan woman, married to Roman Emperor Diocletian, who was a cruel persecutor of Christians. Seeing the courage of St. George and the miracles performed by him, the queen came to believe in Christ. Then having lain at the feet of this great martyr Alexandra in front of the whole nation and the emperor confessed Christ as true God. Diocletian ordered to execute his wife along with St. George.

Alla Gotfskaya is the Gothic queen, who being a Christian, was subjected to persecution of Christians in the IV century. Having the opportunity to save her life by bowing and making sacrifices to pagan idols, she did not abandon the Christian teachings. She was burned alive in a church during worship with the other Christians. About 300 people were killed in the flames, of whom only twenty-six are known by name, and St. Alla is among them. For her commitment to Christianity and martyrdom, which occurred approximately in 375 A.D., St. Alla was canonized by Orthodox Church and is revered as a martyr.

The holy martyr undergone these patiently and did not denied his faith in Christ. Seeing the faith and the courage of St. George, warrior Anatoly came to believe in Christ and announced it openly. He was beheaded at once.

St. Anna the Prophetess is mentioned in the Gospel in a story about the Presentation of the Lord (Luke 2:36-38). In the temple Baby Jesus was met, recognised and praised by the elder Simeon, who was predicted that he would not die until he saw the Saviour of the World. Here in the temple there was also a pious widow Anna, the Prophetess. She was eighty-four and she worshiped God with fasting and prayer night and day. And she also recognised the Saviour and praised the Lord, and went to preach the gospel of the Messiah to all who were awaiting the coming of Christ the Saviour to earth.

Reverend Arkady Vyazemsky also known as wonder-worker of Novy Torzhok had chosen his feat of foolishness for Christ's sake in young age (he was one of the first and few who did it at that time). Religious feat of foolishness (virtual dementation) presupposes the concealment of one's own virtues, along with the rejection and denunciation of worldly values. The wonders had been already performed according to St. Arkady's prayers during his life time. In his mature years Arkady Vyazemsky carried out the monastic feat. Together with his rector - the Reverend Ephraim, he participated in the foundation of Boris and Gleb Monastery (1038). In 1677 the relics of St. Arkady were found incorrupt in Boris and Gleb Monastery of Novy Torzhok, and soon they became famous for miraculous healings.

Saint princes Boris and Gleb are the first Russian saints, who were canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church as well as by the Church of Constantinople. Their veneration had already started under Prince Yaroslav Vladimirovich the Wise (978 - 1054), when the miraculous healings began to happen around the coffin of these holy martyrs: the blind became able to see, the lame - to walk.

Apart from the fact that these brothers are the patron saints of all people named Boris and Gleb, they also help the believers to get rid of diseases of the locomotor apparatus.

Saint monk-martyr Bademus lived in the IV century in the Persian city of Bethlapeta. During the persecution of Christians, having been in custody for four months and, despite the brutal torture, remaining the spiritual leader and the support for the Persian Christians. St. Bademus died by hand of the repudiated Christian named Nirsan. St. Bademus was executed in 376 A.D. According to the hagiography of this saint, the endurance of Archimandrite Bademus made a strong impression on the pagans; many of them began to doubt their pagan beliefs. St. Bademus is a Christian saint, who is revered as the monk-martyr. He is the patron saint of all those who were baptized with the name Vadim.

Saint Martyr Blaise, Bishop of Sebastea

Saint Blaise of Sebastea is venerated by the Othodox Church in the congregation of saint martyrs. He was a bishop of the city of Sebastea in Cappadocia, a province of the Roman Empire in Asia Minor. He led a devout life, made many miracles and healed many people calling on the name of the Savior during his lifetime. He repeated the deed of Jesus Christ – walking on water. He lived at the time of persecution of Christians, survived terrible tortures and was executed ca 316. Tradition has it that believers were healed from the Saint’s tomb. Today particles of Saint Blaise’s holy relics are preserved in many European countries.

Martyr Valentine of Dorostolon was born in the Mysian city of Dorostolon in the 3rd century. He was a warrior at the reign of Absolan. It was a cruel time of persecution of Christians. At the age of 30 he was executed together with Saint Martyr Pasicratus for open confession of Christian faith and rejection to bring a sacrifice for pagan idols.

Saint Martyr Valentine of Interamnium

Valentine of Interamnium lived in the Italian city of Interamnium. From his life we know about his gift of healing. Using prayer Saint Valentine would deliver people from the diseases physicians could not heal. Saint Valentine’s name became known in the whole city and his sermon converted many citizens to Christianity including Abundius, a son of the city administrator. Abundius would openly confess to be a Christian before his gentile father which caused his wrath that he directed to Saint Valentine. When Valentine of Interamnium had refused to bring a sacrifice to heathen gods he was executed. His holy relics are still preserved in Interamnium.

Saint Martyr Valentine was born in Palestinian Caesarea. She lived during the reign of the Roman Emperor Maximian who continued the persecution of Christians begun by Diocletian. In those times a refusal to participate in sacrificial offerings to heathen gods would threaten you with an execution. Saint Valentine as many other Christians was accused of disrespect to gods. She could have saved her life if she had brought offerings to heathen idols, but Saint Valentine did not renounce Christian faith for which she was tortured and executed.

Saint martyrs Faith, Hope, Charity and their mother Sophia lived in Rome in the 2nd century. In spite of their young age the sisters “… confessed their faith in Christ fearlessly and never renounced it for the sake of all kinds of earthly joys they were promised, they never retracted in the face of terrible tortures….” Their mother Saint Sophia who had raised her daughters in love to God teaching them not to become attached to temporal values was a witness of their tortures and accepted “sufferings for Christ not with the body but with the heart.” The martyrs’ names are symbolic – a mother of three Christian virtues – faith, hope and love. The martyrs’ intercession would be sought in case of special need and sorrow.

Saint Venerable Vitalis being a monk came to Alexandria near the end of his life. He undertook a hard and unusual deed. Working and fasting for the whole day he would eat only a bean in the evening and would give all the money he had earned to prostitutes begging them to remain pure and praying for them all night. The next morning he would go back to work again. He saved many women from sin but gained a fame of a sinner and suffered many sneers and humiliation. Looking like a sinner and fornicator before people he would bring the lost to repentance. Only after he had died the women he had saved could tell about his virtues and mercy for he had had them take a vow to keep everything in secret.

Victor lived in the 2nd century. He was a Christian and served in the Roman Army. In the time of persecution of Christians there were attempts to force him to bring sacrifice to heathen gods but he refused and was tortured. We will not quote the whole list of tortures since reading them causes tremor. Suffice it to say that protected by the armor of faith saint Victor survived all the tortures and was executed only after an executor’s wife seeing his firmness also believed in Christ.

Saint Bishop Gennadius was an author of a number of sermons and interpretations. In order to avoid all kinds of illegal actions in Church he would keep strict watch over those taking orders and made sure they knew the Holy Scriptures well. Saint Bishop Gennadius died peacefully in 471.

When he saw the sufferings of his friend Eustratius, his courage, patience and the miracle of the Savior Jesus Christ revealed on him, saint Eugene refused to obey Roman authorities, openly confessed his faith and was executed. Only 5 other women have had this honor over Christian history (Mary Magdalene, protomartyr Thecla, martyr Appia, princess Olga and Nina the enlightener of Georgia). The expression “New Helena” has become common in Eastern Christianity. It is used for both saint empresses (Pulcheria, Theodora etc.) and princesses (e.g. Olga) who did a lot for spreading Christianity or affirmation and preservation of its dogmas.

Finding something good in every person and “calling for mercy towards the fallen” were her heart’s constant yearning. She is both a blessed princess and a righteous, venerable person as well as a martyr. The Saints Peter and Theuronia (bearing monastic names David and Ephrosynia) are orthodox patrons of the family. Saint Peter and Theuronia of Murom are prayed to for family well-being, happiness in marriage and for giving children. Venerable Sergius of Radonezh is the greatest wonderworker whose holy relics are stored in the Trinity Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius that he founded. Just as in the days of his life so today many people are healed by his prayers – both in body and soul. The great intercessor is addressed to in every trouble or difficulty. Venerable Sergius of Radonezh has a special blessing to help in prayers for giving humbleness and mortification of pride, egotism and haughtiness. He is prayed to for development of intellect in children, help in learning and preserving of warriors’ life in battle.

SAINT SPYRIDON
 
SAINT SPYRIDON

Saint Spyridon of Trimyphunteia was born towards the end of the third century on the island of Cyprus. He was a shepherd and is traditionally depicted wearing the beehive shepherd's hat of antiquity. He became a bishop and in 325 attended the First Ecumenical Council in Nicea. Saint Simeon Metaphrastes (10th century), wrote an account of his Life, and compared Saint Spyridon to the Patriarch Abraham in his virtue and hospitality. It is elsewhere recounted that the saint set sail by ship for Alexandria where he put an end to the pagan worship of idols. He died on Cyprus in 348 where his relics were kept for over three hundred years. Following an Arab raid in the seventh century; the saint's body was carried to Constantinople, where it was kept until the fall of the city to the Turks in 1453. In 1456 it was taken to Corfu where it is venerated to this day and of which island he is patron.
